Bet on who will buy Twitter in 2009

Twitter, the new darling of the Internet, has become the subject of much discussion lately.

The popularity of Twitter has skyrocketed over the last year or so, and as result it might find itself in the shopping bags of other big web operators. Companies like Google, Facebook or Microsoft. Or perhaps even Easyjet!

Twitter insist that they are not for sale, but how many other tech companies before them have said that, only to be later assimilated by Google or Microsoft?

So how much is Twitter really worth?

Some experts are suggesting as much as a cool $1 billion dollars! Could they realistically turn that down?

Even Facebook, clearly feeling threatened by Twitter, has ‘twitterised’ its design so that users can send live updates much like on Twitter. An acquisition for them would mean no more competition from this annoying little upstart, who has blasted right into their space in the web. Not long ago, Twitter turned down an offer of $500 million from Facebook.

For Google, this would be the social network that they have been yearning for. Their previous attempts have been less than successful (Orkut) although some believe that Google are secretly building their own social network behind the scenes.

Could a community of people tweeting be something that Microsoft might use to push their dwindling search product? Much the same could be asked of Yahoo.

The prevalence of Myspace has been waning since the arrival of Twitter. Could a surprise acquisition from them be on the cards?

Easyjet are a bit of a rank outsider, however, what we can say without any doubt is that Easyjet are more likely to buy Twitter than Ryanair, because Ryanair apparently think bloggers are lunatics, and what is Twitter, if not a mini blogging community?
