The odds may not have been high -- you win you donate $100,000, you lose you donate $100,000 but apparently this was the bet made by actor Ashton Kutcher, on his race to beat CNN to 1 million followers on Twitter.
Kutcher won the race last Friday, only just beating the CNN account, which had 998,239 followers when Kutcher hit his magic 1 million mark.
He apparently thought that Twitter was a good tool for massaging his ego, but has since discovered he can do good with it.
Andrew Cherwenka from the Huffington Post blog said:
“It’s a turning point in media. He’s one person who uses a free media platform to reach a large audience. And that really hasn’t been done before,” Cherwenka said. “He didn’t spend a penny on this. And that’s kind of the point of any kind of social activity on the Web.”
Kutcher had initiated quite a campaign in order to gain the million followers -- here’s some of the footage:
The money will be donated to World Malaria Day charity. Kucher wrote, “Let’s rally the troops on World Malaria Day… If we all rally we can make malaria a thing 4 history books that we all say, I can’t believe people use to die from that.”
Oprah and CNN have also made donations.
Here he is, hitting the one million followers mark, with Demi Moore and others in the background.
Well done Ashton. Let’s see what he does with his newfound power.
Apparently now the US Army are now going after Kutcher’s top Twitter spot.
Will they be able to beat Kutcher? You can bet on the outcome here.
