Sure, it was only one game, and the second game of the Premier League season to boot. By the time the season ends, it might simply be a blip on Manchester United’s run to another title. However, for now the last result the defending champions have is this; they lost 1-0 to the just promoted Burnley.

Burnley, who had to win a playoff to get promoted to the Premier League, managed to stage the huge upset thanks to a Robbie Blake goal in the 19th minute. They also had to weather the storm against the more talented United, and had to get a bit of good fortune as well. Michael Carrick missed a penalty kick near the end of the first half, and all in all Manchester United managed 19 shots, but only four of those were on target.

Additionally, as you may expect, Man U dominated possession, holding onto the ball for 67% of the game. Of course, all that really mattered in the end was the score, which was in favour of Burnley.

Again, in the long run this game likely won’t mean much. Perhaps if Manchester United lose the league by less than three points or Burnley staves off relegation by the skin of their teeth we will look back at this game as maybe being the reason why. However, for now it is simply the biggest victory in the recent history of Burnley, and an ugly loss for Manchester United. For a team looking to defend their title, this season has got off to an inauspicious start.
