It has been a long time, since 1972, since an NFL team went undefeated throughout the entire season. Sure, the New England Patriots went undefeated throughout the regular season in 2007, but they of course lost the Super Bowl. However, even that was a rare occurrence.
This season, two teams are left with a chance to repeat what the Patriots did in 2007, and they hope they can even beat that by finishing with a Super Bowl win as well. Those two teams are the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.
Both teams currently sit at 7-0, so they both have a long way to go obviously. However, they are the only teams left with a chance, so all eyes will be on the both of them.
Both teams are known for their high powered offenses, the Saints have far and away the most points per game in the league, but both have also played solid defense this season. That’s important, because if all you do it play shootouts, all it takes is an error or two on offense and you’ve got a loss.
This week, the Colts host division rivals the Houston Texans, and the Saints play a divisional opponent as well, the Carolina Panthers. While neither team is considered one of the league’s elite, the Texans are the better opponent, as they currently stand at 5-3 with a potent offense of their own, and they historically play the Colts tough.
Even if both teams pull out their expected wins this week, they still have several more games to win, with more scrutiny from week to week. For the sake of interest, hopefully at least one of them can make it to double digit wins before losing. If not, maybe we can all find solace in Tampa Bay’s “quest” to go 0-16.
Hey, until the Detroit Lions did it last season, the Bucs were the last winless team in the NFL. Clearly, they have a proud legacy to hold up to.
