With no games till Wednesday 6th January 2010, all teams will be taking stock of their performances during the past four months.
Inter Milan – the 2008 Serie A Champions – have continued where they left off. Currently they are ahead of their nearest rivals, AC Milan, by 8 points after 17 games. Milan does however have a game in hand.
While Inter has had a great start both in the Champions League and defending their title, manager Jose Mourinho has not been so lucky at times. Under pressure not so long ago to maintain results he was very recently forced to apologise for verbally abusing a journalist.
Mourinho denied making any physical contact but Inter’s President – Massimo Moratti, has agreed to investigate, after a complaint was made by the journalist’s union.
Inter’s main rival, AC Milan, finished 3rd in the table last season but are managing to hold off Juventus who, despite currently lying in 3rd position themselves, have had an inconsistent season so far.
Bottom of the table Siena finished in the middle of the table last season as did Catania. However, the Sicilian team seems to have developed a spark of belief after they beat Juventus 2-1 away last weekend. The question is. Can this continue next year?
Atalanta – another team that finished mid table last season – are struggling this season. Currently lying in 18th place on just 13 points, they are just 2 places from bottom. They do have a game in hand but whether this is sufficient to help stop the slide, time will tell.
Lazio is also one of a number of teams that appear to be struggling to find their form this season. They finished 10th last season but are lying in 16th place at the moment. That said, unless something goes drastically wrong next year, it is unlikely they will drop.
Fiorentina may be riding high in the Champions League but they, like Lazio are also struggling in Serie A. They finished 4th last season but are currently in 10th position.
This contrasts with Bari – the Serie B Champions who have done well so far. Going into the Christmas break, they are 9th on 24 points. Serie B runners up – Parma – are doing even better; they lie 5th on 28 points.
Livorno, the Serie B playoff winners on the other hand are only just holding their own. They currently lie in 15th place on 18 points but with only 5 teams below them and just 6 points ahead of the bottom team Siena, they will have to work hard to ensure they remain in the top flight.
