British football may be freezing at the moment but Italian football is red hot.
Inter Milan managed (just) to stretch their lead at the top of Serie A after beating bottom club Siena 4-3, if you followed our betting prediction on Thursday you would have been quids in. However, Siena took the game to the champions, determined to show what they can do; and get themselves off the bottom of the table at the same time. Unfortunately for them, Siena failed in their attempt, even though they did manage to hold Inter to a 2-2 draw at half time.
Maccarone scored for the visitors on 18 minutes but Inter hit back six minutes later, followed by another goal shortly after the half hour. Ekdal levelled the game for Siena a minute later.
The second half was just as sizzling. Maccarone scored again followed once more by Sneijder. The game remained 3-3 till injury time but Samuel killed off any chance of Siena moving above Atalanta when he scored for the home side on the 93rd minute.
Siena are only one point behind Atalanta in Serie A but the latter have two games in hand, which is just as well for Atalanta as they were beaten 1-0 by Palermo yesterday. Again we correctly predicted the correct score in this game, a £10 bet on this forecast would have returned a nice £70.
What in theory should be the battle of the gladiators appears to have been something of a damp squib with Milan’s 3-0 win over Juventus. This is good news for Inter’s local rival but seems to emphasise once again, Juventus’ inconsistency. To cap off a great week of Serie A predictions we also forecast 2 or 3 goals in this game at 1.84.
The fans certainly weren’t happy – they protested. They jeered chief coach Ciro Ferrara on a number of occasions and expected him to bring on Del Piero who was left on the bench for the first 60 minutes.
Italian football players (and its fans) are noticeably fiery at times but lighting a fire in the stadium is taking things a bit far.
Milan’s win has now opened a small gap with Juventus, but they still have some work to do to close the gap on Inter. Could this be the start of a two horse race for the championship? It could be, unless Juventus regain their consistency and actively challenge for the top spot. There is still time but it is fast running out.
