SPAIN – Basement club Xerez made Real Madrid work for the three points on Saturday evening, but Los Blancos proved they had what it took as they notched up three second half goals. Alvaro Arbeloa started the scoring before Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace to ensure a Real win.
Two goals for Ronaldo on his return to action after a two-game ban underlined the impact he is having at Real Madrid. The two goals took his tally for the season in the league up to 11, only 5 goals behind Lionel Messi who has played considerably more games.
Madrid coach Pellegrini also praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s contribution stating that, “Ronaldo is essential, even though we won the games without him. Today he returned and scored two goals, created space and gave a lot to the team.”
The win for Madrid closed the gap on Barcelona to just two points for a short time at least. Defeat for Xerez leaves them firmly rooted to the bottom of the league and a massive ten points from safety.
Los Blancos can now turn their attention to Tuesday nights Champions League clash away to Lyon. The French side have achieved some good results in the Champions League this season but will have to be at the top of their game to get anything out of Ronaldo and co.
Lyon’s league form has been very inconsistent this season so Real Madrid really should be looking to go there and claim a win in the first leg. Back Ronaldo to score and Real Madrid to win at 3.40.
As we surmised in last week’s La Liga predictions, Athletico did city rivals Madrid a huge favour on Sunday night by beating Barcelona 2-1 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. Early goals from Diego Forlan and Simao were enough to take all three points and throw the title race up in the air once again.
Only two points separate Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of La Liga. And the odds on Real winning La Liga title have shortened to reflect the ever shortening gap between the two giants of Spanish football.
